Decluttering Is the New Black.

Less is the new more.

Unfortunately, most people who struggle with decluttering do so because of one of two reasons:

1. Anxiety/dread at the mammoth task

2. Lack of time

Decluttering Despite Dread

If you're one of the many who hate the idea of decluttering because it sounds as fun as a kidney stone, you need a mindset change.

Decluttering can be fun!

According to Joshua Becker at Becoming Minimalist, one of the best ways to get started decluttering is to simply fill up a single trash bag. "Early in our journey towards simplicity, one of my favorite decluttering techniques was to grab a simple large trash bag and see how quickly I could fill it," he says. "While much of what I collected was trash, this could also be used to fill a bag for Goodwill."

Making It Easy

Another that can make decluttering painless is to allot a small amount of time to a single space. Rather than focus on an out-of-the-way spot like a closet shelf, try tackling a noticeable area in your main living space. The traction you gain and the euphoria you feel from finally being happy with the way your shelf/counter/dining room corner looks can propel you into future decluttering moods every time you see that clean spot.

Start with Simple Choices

Rather than make the decision you're dreading about what to do with that gift you hate from that person you love, throw away the candy wrappers and put up the items that have a definite home. The act of making easy choices will strengthen your resolve, then, for those harder decisions.

No Procrastination Allowed

One thing to remember: allowing yourself to put off replacing an item is the same as seeding your next big mess. Take thirty seconds to walk that item to its home before moving to the next item, even if it means you'll need to come back to the project later. Just make sure you do come back!

But I Have No Time!

No doubt about it: decluttering takes time. Lots of it.
